The organization has been largely silent on the dynastic succession, even after Jong Eun was formally chosen at the Chosun Workers’ Party Delegates’ Conference in September last year. Now, however, according to information obtained by the director of Rescue the North Korean People! Urgent Action Network, Lee Young Hwa, Kim Jong Eun was referred to by name for the first time at the second meeting of the 22nd Chongryon Central Committee by Vice-Chairman Ho Jong Man. Ho reportedly told the meeting, “Let us serve Captain Kim Jong Eun, and present our achievements to the leading general, a shining light upon the Baekdu tradition.” Lee believes that this comment means the indoctrination and glorification of Kim Jong Eun is set about to begin in earnest.Lee said there were other comments supportive of the dynastic succession from attendees and other participants, pledging their strength in support of the successor.“The moves by the Chongryon started in June, after the vice-chairman visited North Korea and received instructions from the Workers’ Party to begin the glorification of Kim Jong Eun. The Chongryon sent the minutes of its meeting on the 9th to North Korea in order to publicize the association’s support for the succession,” according to Lee.The reason Kim Jong Eun’s glorification is only being talked about now despite emerging as the successor-in-waiting last September is, Lee says, because of many of the association’s members loath the current system, “A lot of members in the Cheongryeon have very deep-seated dissatisfaction and objection to the dynastic succession system. Some people see it as no different from an empire and that if this succession comes to pass, they will leave.”“There were a lot of people who took a long time to accept Kim Jong Il when he took over as General Secretary, and then only because they believed it was the will of Kim Il Sung. Only now, we’re not talking about his son, but his grandson. The Party is having to go to great lengths to explain the justification for this third generation succession,” Lee added, noting, “Obviously the biggest obstacle at the moment is internal dissatisfaction and resistance from within the organization.”“They are going to suffer through a fair amount of quarrelling and adversity as this process of glorification expands, from cadres down to ordinary members,” he continued, warning that this may lead to a potential split within the ranks of the association. On this, one former Chongryon member told The Daily NK from Tokyo, “There has been a lot of unease within the organization after Kim Jong Eun appeared last year, wondering when the indoctrination was going to begin. The most important things for ordinary members are free high school education and other education problems. There will be a lot of internal dissatisfaction if they try to force through ideological education of the third generation succession system and the Japanese government cuts off their support due to problems with the worshipping of the Kim family.”“At first they tried not to make people not look at Kim Jong Eun’s too carefully. That’s a sure sign that there is displeasure towards him. I think it’s inevitable that some members of the Chongryon are going to break away from the organization.” SHARE North Korea tries to accelerate building of walls and fences along border with China Chongryon Finally Looking at Kim Jong Eun There are signs that North Korea is running into serious difficulties with its corn harvest News News read more
